This years Breeders Cup will be held at the historical Churchill Downs on November 2nd and 3rd. The Friday card will be known as the “Future Stars Friday” and will feature five championship races for 2-year olds, including the new $1 million “Juvenile Turf Sprint”. Saturday’s card will feature nine championship races, including the $4 million “Longines Turf Race” and the $6 million “Classic”.
These are the world’s finest thoroughbreds, which may qualify for these prestigious races in one of three ways:
- Win a Breeders Cup Challenge Race
- Earn points from a major race
- Be selected by a panel of experts
This is the richest two days in sports, with $30 million paid out. The winners will also be awarded a bronze trophy, a reproduction of the original Torrie Horse, and a garland of flowers made from Asters, Cremons, and Orchids exclusively for the Breeders Cup.
This all started in 1982 when a group of horsemen got together and suggested that there should be a championship race to determine, once and for all, who is the best. Since then this has been a classic event in racing with record crowds in attendance. So far the record for the two days is 118, 484 at Santa Anita in 2016.
