Still a Great Champion

American Pharoah was upset by keen ice in the $1.6 million Travers Stakes at Sarasota on Saturday. Pharoah and Frosted were neck and neck throughout the race with Pharoah pulling away from him in the stretch. But Keen Ice was coming on strong and was even with Pharoah at the Sixteenth pole and went on to win by three-quarters of a length. Keen Ice, trained by Louisville’s Dale Romans went off at 16 to 1.

Sarasota lived up to its reputation as the “Graveyard of Champions”. Whirlaway remains the only Triple Crown winner who went on to win the Travers Stakes in 1941.

While the upcoming Breeders Cup in Lexington and other races had been considered in American Pharoah’s future, that may or may not happen. Ahmed Zayat, owner and breeder, may consider retiring his Triple Crown Champion from racing.
