Derby Hopefuls

Three Derby hopefuls came away with important wins Saturday that places them among the favorites to qualify for a position in the starting gate on May 2nd.

Carpe Diem won the $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby and added 50 more points to his credit. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Carpe Diem will now probably head for the Florida Derby at Gulfstream on March 28th.

El Kabeir was victorious in Aqueduct’s $400,000 Gotham Stakes on Saturday. He is now on top of the leader board with 75 points with Risen Star close at 71 and Dortmund third with 70. His next likely start will be the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 4th.

Dortmund led all the way and won the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday. Bob Baffert must be feeling pretty good, since he also has American Pharaoh who makes his 2015 debut this Saturday in the $750,000 rebel stakes in Arkansas. American Pharaoh may be equal to or even better than Dortmund. When asked about the best of the two, Baffert said, “Its like asking which kid do you love the most?” Dortmund’s next step is the Santa Anita Derby on April 4th.
