Dubai Sky came off the pace to win the $550,000 Spiral Stakes by 2-1/4 lengths at Turfway Park on Saturday and paid $16.80 to win. No word yet from hall of fame trainer, Bill Mott, on whether he will run the bay colt in the Kentucky Derby. A somewhat disappointing race by Royal Son, who finished fifth after coming off an impressive win in the Battaglia Stakes. Metaboss was also expected to do better than sixth after his win in the El Camino Real Derby.
Firing Line romped to an impressive 14-1/2 length victory in the $800,000 Sunland Derby in New Mexico on Sunday under the capable hands of Gary Stevens. It was his second win in 5 starts, finishing second in the other three. He paid $2.40 to win. Firing Line, trained by Simon Callaghan, picked up 50 points and now is easily in the field for the Kentucky Derby.
